Barbara C. Leonowicz, affectionately known to many as "Bubbles," passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 5:45 PM. She was 79.
Born on March 23, 1946, in Jersey City, NJ, at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, Barbara was the cherished only child of Stella C. Wilson (née Trembinska) and James F. Wilson.
Barbara lived a truly rich and remarkable life, characterized by her passion for learning, travel, and unwavering support for those she loved. A cosmopolitan spirit, she was one of the few to experience the legendary speed of the Concorde on a round-trip journey to London. As a young, vibrant woman, she also explored the sun-drenched beauty of most of the Caribbean islands. Later in life, she maintained a sophisticated appreciation for fine engineering, holding a lifelong fascination with German cars, especially Porsches.
A dedicated professional, Barbara was a beloved English teacher for many years at Martin Luther King Elementary (PS11). Her love for education was boundless; she possessed deep knowledge in world history, American history, science, and math. She was an avid reader and writer with a legendary knack for grammar and punctuation—she truly believed in the power of the perfectly constructed sentence.
Barbara was rich with wisdom, culture, and character. She possessed a rare ability to see the best in everyone, regardless of background or religion, never judging a book by its cover. She was a pillar of support and always offered a listening ear to anyone who needed it. As a huge dog lover and a great foodie, she enjoyed fine Italian cuisine, particularly white wine mussels, but also had a refined palate for Indian and other global foods.
After many years living independently in Leonia, NJ, Barbara recently relocated to Verona, NJ, to be lovingly cared for by the family who had adopted her as a mother, grandmother, and godmother. Her godchildren were instrumental in keeping her young, teaching her the modern ways of Instacart and Amazon, where she humorously indulged in ordering plants, turmeric, and peanuts.
Barbara C. Leonowicz was truly one in a trillion, and the world is a little quieter without her vast knowledge and vibrant presence.
